UNR Extended Studies Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Program
This program through UNR Extended Studies is designed for operations leaders, plant managers, continuous improvement leaders, business owners and executives, and Green Belts seeking organizational leadership responsibilities.
Intense domestic and global competition requires organizations to make improvements and efficiencies to stay ahead of the pack. Lean Six Sigma Black Belts are those leaders within an organization educated to spearhead the performance improvements and cost reduction activities necessary to remain competitive. Professionals from manufacturing, healthcare, logistics, engineering, administration and service industries can benefit from this program.
Objectives
You learn to use Lean to:
• Identify projects
• Identify Kaizen events to execute the project
• Develop charters
• Run Kaizen events
• Create a Lean culture at their company
• Manage and sustain the Lean culture at their company
Certification Components
The Lean Six Sigma Black Belt Certification Program consists of classroom instruction, homework, one-on-one mentoring and company visit, and one independent project approved by participant’s company.
Prerequisite
Anyone who has been Green Belt certified by Extended Studies is eligible to pursue a Black Belt. If you do not meet the Green Belt prerequisite, email EXSprograminfo@unr.edu, and the instructor will determine whether the prerequisite can be waived.
When: In-person instruction: Sept. 14-16, 2026, 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
Certification Project Period: Sept. 17-Nov. 13, 2026

Fee: $4,995. The program includes classroom instruction, implementation coaching, project report-outs and development of a company-specific Lean road map.

Black Belt Daily Overview
Students are advised to bring their Green Belt binders and laptops for these sessions.
Session 1: Sept. 14, Mon., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Lean Transformation
• Small groups of students create the “one-hour” introductory presentation
Session 2: Sept. 15, Tues., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Creating a Lean Culture
• Students do a Lean Skills assessment of the organization
• Students create a Lean organization chart for their organization
• Students create the presentation template
Session 3: Sept. 16, Wed., 9 a.m.-5 p.m.
• Project Evaluation
• Students create charters in small groups
Report-outs
As part of certification requirements, students also will be running the
following events at their company:
• 5S event identifying all the S’s, and the 8 Lean wastes
• An improvement event based on the article “The Lean Service Machine”
Students will be reporting out on these events and sharing their experiences with the Black Belt cohort. The dates for the report-out will be decided on the first day of class.
