American Manufacturing: Powering Economic Growth, Employment, and Technological Progress

by Manufacture Nevada

Manufacturing is a cornerstone of the U.S. economy. From vehicles to everyday electronics, much of what we depend on is produced in factories nationwide. This interconnected industry generates jobs, supports local communities, and enhances national security, reinforcing America's leadership in innovation and economic strength. The Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP) is vital in empowering small and medium-sized manufacturers to contribute significantly to this growth.

Major Contributor to the U.S. Economy

Manufacturing remains a powerful driver of the U.S. economy. In Q3 of 2024, the sector contributed $2.93 trillion, up from $2.91 trillion the previous quarter, and accounted for 10% of the nations GDP. If U.S. manufacturing were a standalone country, it would rank as the seventh-largest economy in the world.

Beyond its direct output, manufacturing has a significant multiplier effect: every dollar spent in the sector generates $2.69 in overall economic activity, one of the highest among all industries. With exports of manufactured goods reaching a record $1.6 trillion in 2023, the sector also fuels growth across supply chains by driving demand for raw materials, transportation, and supporting services.

Millions of High-Quality Jobs

As of January 2025, over 13 million people were employed by more than 244,000 U.S. manufacturers, surpassing pre-pandemic levels, according to the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM). These positions are well-paying, averaging over $102,000 annually, and often include benefits like health insurance, offering finanical stability for families across the country.

While manufacturing may seem dominated by large firms, the majority are small businesses, over 93% have fewer than 100 employees, and nearly 75% have fewer than 20. These smaller manufacturers often lack the resources to invest in consulting, technology, or workforce training. That's where MEP centers, Manufacture Nevada being one of them, come in. Providing accessible, local support to help build skilled teams and strengthen long-term job security in communities nationwide.

Fueling Innovation and Technology Advancement

American manufacturing has long been driven by innovation, with pioneers like Eli Whitney, Henry Ford, and George Devol transforming the industry through groundbreaking inventions, from the cotton gin and assembly line to CAD software and industrial robots. Visionaries such as Lynn Conway and Chuck Hull further accelerated progress, shaping modern computing and 3D printing.

Today innovation remains at the core of U.S. manufacturing. The Department of Defense reports that the sector accounts for 55% of all U.S. patents, underscoring its role as a key driver of technological advancement. In 2021 alone, manufacturers performed $326 billion in domestic R&D, more than half of the nation's total, continuing to push boundaries and enhance the speed, strength, and intelligence of modern manufacturing.
